Rae Ballard's choreography has been described by Jennifer Dunning of The New York Times as having “the quality of a short story.” This choreography and related scripts written by Ms. Ballard for dance/theater works have provided the artistic direction for Thoughts in Motion, a non-profit company which was founded in the 1980s. Current company members include:
LAUREN NASLUND began her modern dance studies in Chicago with Frances Allis. She holds degrees in Biology from the University of Chicago and Harvard. While pursuing her studies, she danced in Chicago with A Dance Ensemble and in the Boston area with the Performing Arts Ensemble and the Massachusetts Dance Ensemble. Lauren moved to New York in 1984 to work with the theater/dance company Plath/Taucher Productions. She was a member of Anna Sokolow's Players' Project for 15 years, and has also performed with Andrew Jannetti & Dancers, Rae Ballard's Thoughts in Motion, Deborah Carr's Theatre Dance Ensemble, Jim May, and Alan Danielson.
MADOKA ATSUMI began her dance studies in Japan. After graduating with honors in dance from the University of Akron, Ohio, Ms. Atsumi moved to New York City. In addition to performing with Thoughts in Motion, she has danced with Sokolow Theater-Dance Ensemble, Salome Solano, Urban Artworks II and Inner Landscapes Dance Theater in New Hampshire, Pennsylvania as well as in NYC.
